Happy Halloween, pet lovers! This is a highly anticipated holiday for those of us with children, or who just happen to be children at heart. Unfortunately, it can be a very scary night for our dogs and cats. We want to tell you some simple steps to keep your furry friends safe while you celebrate. If you plan to open your door to trick-or-treaters throughout the night, consider keeping your pets in a separate room, away from the open door. Even if you trust your pets not to run through the door, there is still always a risk that they can become frightened or overwhelmed and run away, or even snap at a child who hasn’t been taught how to properly greet an animal. It’s always the safest option to simply avoid these interactions. It’s also a good idea to make sure all of your pets have updated, easy to read ID tags, or a registered microchip, just in case! Halloween is one of the few days each year that there is a seemingly unlimited supply of candy and treats in the home. Most of us know that ingredients like chocolate and xylitol are extremely harmful to cats and dogs, but it’s important to be vigilant to keep it far out of their reach. It does not take very much of these ingredients to severely harm a small animal.
